mrt

MRT (Moral Reconation Therapy), developed in 1986 for prisoners to help recidivism, is a 16-step program which tries to "help [youth] make decisions based

on doing what is right."

In this program, students work through a step-by-step process which teaches them about honesty, trust, acceptance, self-awareness, healing, helping others, long and short-term goals, positive change, and choosing and keeping moral commitments.

Our program's implementation of MRT is to help our youth make positive decisions and lasting changes, so as not to end up back in the juvenile system.

The goal of our Independent Living Program is to equip young adults with the essential skills needed to lead successful and well-balanced lives. These skills are put to practice in a structured environment, with the guidance of staff and an Independent Living Coordinator.

Some of the Independent Living skills taught, include:

  • Self-care

  • Budgeting

  • Time Management

  • Health and Hygiene

  • Meal Planning and Preparation

A majority, if not all, of our youth receive counseling services through outside sources. Some are local, and others from the student's place of origin to keep continuity. This is

done via Zoom, telehealth, or in some instances we

transport per the counselor's recommendation.

Many of our at-risk youth are in need of mental health services. We facilitate this to ensure their needs are met, and continue to be met, even after discharge from the program.

Extracurricular
activities

We emphasize positive use of recreation and leisure time. Therapeutic recreation enables young people to build positive peer relationships, sharpen individual skills, and develop self-confidence in an atmosphere of fun. We use community resources as much as possible to instill lifelong habits of physical activity and fitness.

Extracurricular activities are a critical part of our level system and required to move up. Because our youth attend public school while in the program, this provides many opportunities to participate in a multitude of activities. These include athletics, music, academic, and the performing arts.
